Gianni Bardaro (Denmark/Italy)
Saxophonist/Composer/Song writer

Gianni Bardaro, with his intense and original playing/composing, has been described several times as an artist particularly able to create a delicious mix of overflowing energy and vibrant melody at the same time. Inspired by the dynamic power of sounds, he is always unpredictable, whether in a meditative mood or a playful one, inviting the odience to keep ears wide open and to live in the escaping moment.

Born in Formia, Italy and based in Copenhagen, Denmark since 2002, he started to play the saxophone at the age of 11, behind the steps of his father, amatorial drummer. Since then Gianni dedicated himself completely to music. He is educated both in classical music (Conservatorio O. respighi, Latina, diploma 10/10 year: 1995; teacher: Mauro Zazzarini) and in Jazz Music (Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella, Napoli, diploma 10/10 year: 2002; teacher: Bruno Tommaso).

Gianni is performing professionally since the age of 14, going across many countries like Italy, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Tunisia, Colombia, collaborating and recording with several well-known jazz musicians. He performed as additional member for the “Philharmonic Orchestra of Plovdiv and for world-known composers such as Goffredo Petrassi and Roberto De Simone.
In Denmark, Bardaro had the opportunity to play also for the Danish Royal Family and the national Danish TV channel DR2.
In 2001, he founded the Project Sinestetic Jazz, playing mostly his own compositions. One of them, Song for Dicembre, has been licensed to the English Philips. The jazz ballad was distributed from the Philips company in September 2001, in 20.000 copies all over Europe.
In 1999, Gianni won the national jazz competition “Baronissi 1999” with the “Afro Jazz quartet" in the category New talented Musicians and obtained the second place in the same competition in 2001 in the professional category with the Jam Orchestra

Right now, Bardaro is also very active as composer and performer, in other sectors of the music industry. He composes, arranges and records for different projects of electronic music, collaborating with an internacional network of artists and labels such as l´Escalier Srl (Warner Bros Chappel Italy)" and MODERNactivism records by “Italian Association of Electronic Culture”

Bardaro will release a new CD with Sinestetic Jazz in the beginning of 2007. Behind the concept Sinestetic Jazz is a good example of new jazz vibes and offers a young, fresh but precise sound with a clear understanding of its musical direction.

Sinestetic Jazz is a good example of new jazz vibes and offers a young, fresh but precise sound with a clear understanding of its musical direction.

The synestethesia can involve any of the senses and it can be defined as an emotional experience which causes a confusion of the senses.

Is it possible to taste a colour? To touch a smell? And can you see the sound of the music? With this meaning, Gianni Bardaro tries to translate the synestetic experience into music. He is interested in adopting the emotional atmosphere in music, to create an overflow of a strong energy.

The "Overflow" would then provoke and lead a conscious confusion of the senses, towards which the music is not just heard but even seen, touched, smelled and tasted. With Sinestetic Jazz, Bardaro focus mostly on original compositions.

Technically, he uses the compositional parameters of electronic music, in particular he is interested in the exploration and evolution of the concept of "loop" translated into acoustic music.

The main compositional influence remains jazz with shadows of Latin, Mediterranean and Scandinavian sounds. One of the most important points of Sinestetic Jazz is the Improvisation Moment of each soloist.

It can be considered the "breath of the escaping moment" where a clear and distinctive sound is communicated with emotion through unconventional colourful improvisations.

A contagious energy is generously spread out with imagination and passion, whether in a meditative mood or a playful one.

The title of the new album released by Italian composer and saxophonist Gianni Bardaro is well in tune with the personal vision he brought to the concept as a whole.
"Soul Blueprint" has the qualities of a dual yin yang jazz experience where the complementarity between themes, rhythms, harmonies
and contrasts releases the power of free expression and collective exploration. Inventivity may be impressing in itself, but what Gianni Bardaro achieves is to impregnate it with a modern "soulful blueprint" yet
unemphatic or striking, energetic without overpowering the surroundings as he generously gives enough creative space to all voices in the band, while keeping his interventions meaningful.
The result is a convergent sonic river made of a wide variety of streams meandering effortlessly through energetic and mellow passages,
solos, and dialogues that keep the listener hooked throughout.
Andreas Hatholt (double bass), Jacob Hatholt(drums) and Francesco Cali(piano) are sharing the same spiritual state with Gianni Bardaro
who is reaching heights and depths jumping courageously from a theme to another, painting moods with an organic clarity and intuition.
What better example than the empathic dialogues with Randy Brecker(trumpet/flugelhorn) who leaves his mark of distinction on three songs of the album.
Among them the intimate "Il Tempio Della Nuvola Bianca" is especially enchanting and touching, stylistically linked to "Into" through moving bass lines and a sensual piano.
In the same thread "Beso De Negra" echoes a jazzified Nino Rota theme with the saxophone and piano expanding on a bitter-sweet chord. On "Illegal" the rhythm section enhanced by Samuel Torres's percussion creates a feeling of spiraling emergency while the Latin
tempo emerges vividly from an intricate shadowy twists.
"A Slow Walk To No-Action" (title suggests the Taoist concept non action)the saxophone is soaring full of vitality and fluidity backed by a fiery rhythm section ending the album on an ascendant note . "Soul Blueprint" is keeping the listener awake and alert along the way. What is around the next corner, what new experience I will hear? And all the musicians gave the best of them to make you enjoy the ride!

Gianni Bardaro
Soul Blueprint
EmArcy
By Bill Milkowski

"Italian alto saxophonist-composer Gianni Bardaro showcases his considerable chops and penchant for writing difficult material on his fifth project as a leader. The turbulent “Neffertiti” (not the Wayne Shorter composition) exhibits his laser-sharp precision on challenging unisons with pianist Francesco Cali and bassist Andreas Hatholt, along with a freeblowing solo that swings forcefully as it tips into edgier territory. The angular “Dav” recalls some of Steve Coleman’s experiments with flowing over intricate time-signature shifts. Special guest Randy Brecker appears on “Il Tempio Della Nuvola Bianca,” which opens with fugue-like flourishes between trumpet and alto, then resolves to sparse balladic playing that highlights his lyrical flugelhorn work. Brecker offers some scintillating muted trumpet on the exhilarating “Against” and engages in a lively three-way conversation with Bardaro and conguero Samuel Torres on the rhythmically charged, Afro-Cuban-flavored “Illegal.” Bardaro’s most lyrical playing comes on the warm ballad “Into.” He closes with an alto onslaught, nonchalantly double-timing on “A Slow Walk to No-Action.” Stateside jazz fans need to know about this exceptional talent."

Short interview

JWQ: Did you feel that working with North European musicians you and Francesco had to " transcend" cultural barriers?
Gianni Bardaro: Not at all! It was actually surprising because I was personally feeling much better working with North European. I don t know if it was the same for Francesco but I guess so and it was so easy going working with them. Of course I had to wait long time to find the "right musicians" for this project but luckily it worked out and the fact that I recorded this Cd after only 4 months we all met, tells a lot. In this project each musician plays and improvises with his own music cultural background and I suppose that our most important objective is to make music and where there is music, there is no need to " transcend" cultural barriers.

JWQ: How smooth was the communication through jazz and improvisation between the members of the project ?
Gianni Bardaro:The comunication was totally smooth. The musicians of this project come from different countries and we all "speak" different languages during the improvisation but the interplay just comes out by itself fusing the different stiles into one...the sinestetic style, different jazz languages which cohabit in harmony.

Finisduo: Phil Woods Sonata (Gateway Music 2009)

gianni-bardaro-finisduo

PHIL WOODS, personally interested in the publication of this CD, writes the following liner notes:

“I believe that this is the definitive version of this piece. The performances are stunning and the improv sections perfectly realized...” (Phil Woods)

FINISDUO, by the saxophonist Gianni Bardaro and the pianist Mauro Patricelli, is an example of the blending of the elements of classical and jazz music. The performance is more than just the juxtaposition of two kinds of music. It requires the performers to embellish the written music as well as improvise at given sections, much in the spirit of jazz and in the true tradition of Baroque music in such a manner that the listener is often unsure where the written music stops and the improvisations take over. Together with works written by Gianni Bardaro and Mauro Patricelli themselves, Finisduo will perform the revised and newly engraved ‘97 edition of the Alto Sax and Piano Sonata, a "classic" cross-over work by the jazz-legend Phil Woods. The Bardaro – Patricelli Finis Duo is based in Copenhagen, where the two musicians met and merged their common cultural roots with their international experience
