This new album was started in early 2018, under the control of
Latin Grammy Awarded producer Nema Antunes, attracting a talented crew of collaborating musicians like Luiz Brasil, Teo Lima, Marcelo Martins
and even the late Arthur Maia.
Female composers are also celebrated in this work, such as Jana Figarella,
Luiza Salles and Thaís Mota along with Carlinhos Brown and Ivan Lins plus
several international guest performers to light up the team.
Even while taking extra precautions during the pandemic, GUAI is moving ahead quickly on her return to the studio, hungry for more success, starting with the new single next month.
“There have been some tough years in my battle to see this project reach the world, but isn’t it true that calm seas never made a good sailor? There will be super guests voyaging aboard our boat. We need to spread good news in this crazy time we live in. To paraphrase producer Nema Antunes, ‘I tell you all: Nothing will stop us!’ ” emphasizes GUAI.
About the artist GUAI
In capital letters, GUAI is a Brazilian female singer who has Brazil and Jazz
in her voice and soul. She had her first stage experience at the age of 4.
At the end of 2015 GUAI released her debut album entitled DAMA DE PAUS.
This prompted great support from some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, for example Roberto Menescal, Ivan Lins, Carlos Lyra and others. As a result, she received numerous international reviews and was nominated for the biggest music awards in Brazil in 2011, 2012 and 2017, the year that she launched internationally in Lisbon, Portugal.

The title of the album, Higher, illustrates the spirit and dynamics of the group: seeking to go further. It’s a spiritual and physical process, the will to excel and always give the best, whether in concert or in the studio. Voici le retour très attendu de Big Funk Brass. Après 10 années d’existence, plusieurs centaines de concerts, deux albums ainsi que des collaborations avec des artistes de renom comme Gaël Faye, Thomas de Pourquery et Anne Paceo, Big Funk Brass sort son nouvel album le 30 avril 2020. Le titre de l’album, Higher, illustre l’esprit et la dynamique du groupe : chercher à aller toujours plus loin. C’est une démarche spirituelle et physique, la volonté de se surpasser et de donner toujours le meilleur, que ce soit en concert ou en studio. Sur ce nouvel album, on retrouve deux invités Ben l’Oncle Soul et FP de ASM – A State of Mind.
Réputé pour ses compositions riches et innovantes, Big Funk Brass électrise les foules à travers la France depuis 2010. Le projet est habité par des influences hip-hop et New Orleans, avec le Jazz comme point de départ. Emprunt d’évolutions, l’objectif de Big Funk Brass est de ne jamais se reposer sur ses acquis et de surprendre son public par des improvisations effrénées. Pari réussi avec le nouvel album bien nommé Higher dont on découvre en premier extrait Rock The Stage. Réalisé par Thomas Baronnet, le clip de Rock The Stage rend hommage au cinéma de Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs) et de David Fincher (Fight Club) avant de nous entrainer dans ses rythmes pimentés.
Toujours aussi survitaminé, Big Funk Brass est de retour le 30 avril 2020 avec son troisième album Higher qui mêle des notes cuivrées jazz, groove et funk sans compter.
L’écriture des 11 titres de l’album Higher, intégralement composé par les membres du groupe, est avant tout inspirée de la tradition des Brass Bands de la nouvelle Orléans. L’amour du groupe pour ce genre fait notamment suite à plusieurs voyages aux États-Unis qui furent une révélation et qui leur permirent de découvrir en live de groupes emblématiques comme le Hot 8 brass band, les Soul Rebels ou encore le No BS brass band. Le son du de l’album est également métissé d’autres influences venant notamment du hip-hop (the Roots, D’Angelo, Kendrick Lamar) ou du funk (Lettuce, Snarky Puppy). Les membres du Big Funk Brass étant tous actifs dans d’autres projets d’envergures (A State of Mind, No Jazz, Franck Tortiller Collectiv, PJ5, Nola French Connection…) les influences amenées de ces divers groupes sont également bien réelles.
Pour enregistrer cet album intégralement autoproduit, le groupe a élu domicile au studio Gil Evans à Amiens, lieu mythique du jazz international associé au Label Bleu. Le choix pour la prise de son et le mix s’est quant à lui porté sur Adam Bastard (Flavia Coelho, Ben l’oncle soul, King Krab…). Le Big Funk Brass a collaboré avec deux invités sur ce nouvel album : Ben l’Oncle Soul et FP de « ASM – A State of Mind ».
Ben avec qui Alexandre Hérichon, trompettiste du groupe et Adam Bastard, ont l’habitude de travailler, a été invité sur le titre éponyme de l’album. Le titre « Higher » a en effet été composé spécialement pour lui par Alexandre et par l’exceptionnel Gunnar (chanteur de « Gunwood »). L’idée de cette collaboration est née après un concert du Big Funk Brass auquel Ben a assisté.
Le deuxième titre de l’album comprenant un invité est « Teach You To Blow ». Sur ce morceau Big Funk Brass a eu la chance de pouvoir travailler avec FP de « ASM – A State of Mind ». Le groupe était absolument fan de son flow et de sa voix caverneuse et voulait donc intégrer sa patte à ce titre très hip-hop. FP a fait l’honneur au groupe d’écrire des paroles efficaces et drôles autour du thème des cuivres. L’entente a été excellente et Big Funk Brass a désormais la volonté de prolonger ces collaborations sur d’autres projets futurs. Avec Higher, Big Funk Brass fait sonner les cuivres comme personne et nous entraine dans ses rythmes avec un son plus ravageur que jamais. La release party se fera le 30 avril au Zèbre de Belleville.
