JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2023: Simon Denizart(France/Canada)-9-4 (Justin Time Records)

Simon Denizart

Nouveau single 9-4

Disponible chez Justin Time Records

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2023

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2023: Michele Gori(Italy)-Flute Factor

Michele Gori-Flute Factor

Flute Factor is the third album featuring flutist Michele Gori at the helm of his quartet, composed of Roberto Olzer on piano, Roberto Mattei on double bass and Nicola Stranieri on drums. The long and fruitful collaboration of these musicians, who have been travelling the streets of jazz clubs and festivals all over Europe together for fifteen years, translates into a consolidated human and musical understanding, an alchemy recognisable at first hearing, capable of capturing the attention and emotion of every kind of audience, even those less accustomed to jazz.

For Michele Gori, “Jazz” means rhythm and melody, harmony and improvisation, tradition and research, tranquillity and energy, elements that reflect the eight unreleased original compositions of Flute Factor. This album is a musical journey through multicoloured atmospheres, as in the case of the opening track Revolution, in which modern jazz-rock alternates with a classic up tempo swing. Black & Blues is a homage to the roots of jazz, while in Miedo the flute sings a melancholic melody with South American charm. The tracks on Flute Factor were written between 2021 and 2022, with only two exceptions: Looking Forward, a ballad for flute and piano composed in 2012, and French Girl, from 2017. The sources of inspiration are manifold: Jazz Time, for example, was born at the end of an arrangement class at the Clermont-Ferrand conservatory; Tatuzinho, a tribute to Brazil, during one of the many journeys that are part of every musician’s life. The final track is a delicate goodbye that elegantly concludes this journey, making an appointment for the next listening, the next meeting…

EYM Trio & Varijashree Venugopal
Nouvel album Bangalore

World Music Mix: Hakim Jamal(UK)-As She Awakens (2023)

Hakim Jamal-As She Awakens

Hakim Jamal(UK)-As She Awakens
Composer: Paul Ashley Wheatcroft
Label: TalkingHead TV Recordings (2023)

On June 21st 2023, a child was born in Algiers. She has not had a simple start to life – her parents are separated by distance, although she is much loved. We keep communication open and we give her what we can in the ways we can, until we can see her. This I also do with my two other grandchildren, but sadly often with little success.
I wanted to give her a gift that would be memorable, and with the skills I have, I created this for her and about her. It was inspired by a video taken of her by her mother as she was waking up one day.
But it’s more than that – children from her part of the world, and I include the Middle East as well as North Africa suffer daily deprivations and injustices. Children of her precise background find themselves even this week caught up in the awful racist theatre of hate that is France.
Yet they remain at heart just children – alive, trusting, hungry, loving, naturally happy – wherever they are.
In my opinion it is our responsibility to make sure they are taken care of; and so this song is for them too. I hope it makes you think of children you know and ways in which you can be kind to them. Peace.

JazzWorldQuest Showcase 2023: Tony Adamo-Sun Ra Throws a Brick through a Jazz Window

Tony Adamo-Sun Ra Throws a Brick through a Jazz Window

Tony Adamo: Sun Ra Throws A Brick Through A Jazz Window
By Nicholas F. Mondello/Allaboutjazz

May 7, 2023

When one listens to the work of Tony Adamo, there needs to be a self-understanding that Adamo’s approach to jazz completely abolishes any pre-conceptions of what “singing,” “vocalese,” and “storytelling” are. His efforts are a highly-stylized ultra-hip gumbo of these things, usually overlaid over a swinging, driving rhythmic platform. His is music intense and this track is.

Sun Ra Throws a Brick Through a Jazz Window” is quintessential Adamo. In this track, we get a three-minute homage to jazz revolutionary Sun Ra with Adamo’s exciting sing-speak verbiage. The Master of the Arkestra, Sun Ra and various members of his unit tend to be frequently mentioned in Adamo’s work. He is an obvious attraction for Adamo and this tune is no exception.

The tempo is a high-grade fever and Adamo blasts his slick lyrics while tenor man Rob Sudduth of Huey Lewis and the News blows freely in the background. It’s a story-song format that has deep roots in both African and other cultures. Ra, of course, embraced multi-cultural textures within a mystical, hyped-up panoply of exotic costumes, sounds, textures, and instrumentation. Adamo, as is his stock in trade, takes on the role of hipster “griot” or tale-teller. The pungency, intrigue, and overall urgency of Adamo’s and his crew’s presentation is beguiling. It is not pretty, but rather, deeply muscular and invigorating.

Like that of the artist of whom he speaks, Adamo’s work is an acquired taste. One has to meet it halfway or more to really appreciate it. When that occurs, you realize that he is a highly talented, super-creative artist carrying heavy presence. Ra might have “broken jazz’s window with a hurled brick,” however, digging Adamo’s take on that extreme image is a vivid scene worth experiencing.

World Music Mix: Hakim Jamal(UK): Album: “Music From The Mint Hotel”(2023)

Hakim Jamal-Music From The Mint Hotel
Nixon’s Priest
Based on a lilting 3/4 piano pattern, a jazzy and melancholy track with funky electric piano, acoustic guitar and moody saxophone solo.
Hunter S Thompson: “Father John McLaughlin revelled in his role as ’Nixon’s Priest’ (see “A Stroke Of Cheap Genius”) for about a month, but his start faded fast when it was discovered he was pulling down $25,000 a year and living in a luxury apartment at The Watergate. His superiors in the church were horrified… the Good Jesuit Father was planning to marry his girlfriend. McLaughlin disappeared very quickly and nothing has been heard of him since.”

Music From The Mint Hotel” is multi-instrumentalist, and composer Hakim Jamal aka Paul Ashley Wheatcroft`s new album, a musical spectrum that includes jazz-funk, soul, R&B, and hip-hop, all expertly blended to fit the concept based on an essay by famous Beat Generation writer Hunter S. Thompson, known for his book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” among his other best-sellers.

The album’s sonic construct gives the music an exquisite fluidity that take the listener on a cinematic journey through the stories of some fictional characters gathered during the (in)famous‘Mint 400’ Off-Road race. But one should not be familiar with Thopson’s writings to appreciate this wonderful album whose technical and artistic qualities deserve the superlative.

Each of the seventeen tracks stands on its own while seaminglessly integrated with the ensemble through a cohesive sound architecture that skillfully keeps an aesthetic balance between the retro flair and contemporary beats. Layers of instruments and vocal lines re-create the sound of the 60s along with “analog” retro vibes tastefully fused with deep seductive tempos sustained by lush bass lines.

Remarkably how the nostalgic feeling permeates the sonic ensemble as a whole, the composer built a creative bridge over time from today`s cultural perspective, and this is only one of the numerous aspects of the album that make listening to it an enjoyable listening experience.
